Amidst the looming threat of global recession and financial turmoil, Scotland's bio-technology industry has emerged as one of the few burgeoning sectors in our fragile economy.
Scottish excellence in the bio-technical industry is recognised internationally and we currently boast an impressive portfolio of global biotech companies creating over 30,500 jobs throughout the country.
Although the smallest of the Life Sciences sectors Bio-technology has the fastest growth rate at 12.8% per annum and attracts over 400 million in research funding. Contributing factors to this growth rate are the large pool of graduates and post doctoral research students dedicated to bio-technology. Scotland also has an enviable infrastructure which is ideal for the bio-technology industry with several specialist science parks throughout the country providing optimum conditions for numerous global companies.
For many established bio-technical firms the credit crunch has had little effect on overall operations with several bucking the trend and actually expanding their operations, creating a refreshing increase in the number of job opportunities throughout the country.
In February of this year the government backed a life sciences strategy identifying the need for consolidation within the industry to compete on a global spectrum with the aim of securing Scotland as one of the most successful biotech locations creating a plethora of much needed jobs. With the industry benefiting from both foreign and domestic investment it looks set to become one of the most successful bio-technical locations in the world and will be an invaluable area of Scotland's economic development. The industry has already generated an estimated £2.8 billion per year for the Scottish economy.
The bio-technology industry has proved itself to be a highly successful and lucrative field for Scotland and has been identified by the government as one of the key economic drivers for the future. It is undeniable that the biotech industry has had a profound impact on our economy and in this climate of redundancies and financial instability the bio-technology industry is one of the few evolving sectors providing serious career opportunities for many individuals.
