Operations management is the largest area of management in industry, commerce and service organisations. Operations management focuses on the direction of day-to-day operations within any organisation. Particularly in purchasing, distribution and production efficiency, operations management covers many different work areas including product development, industrial plant organisation, quality control, and inventory management.
Operations management professionals develop quantitative skills, and the ability to work well with other managers and staff. Typically, management trainees entering operations management carry out planning analysis, information support, information systems development, and research resources on projects.
The importance of operations management has dramatically increased in recent years. Significant competition, both foreign and domestic, has brought the need for operations management professionals to the fore. Managers in operations management play a strategic, as well as a tactical and logistical role in satisfying customer needs and making their firms competitive.
