Legal Executive

A legal executive is a qualified lawyer who may only practice in England and Wales, and tends to specialise in one specific area of law. There is no direct equivalent to a Legal Executive in Scotland, where legal work is conducted by solicitors and paralegals.

But what is a legal executive?

Legal Executives are qualified lawyers with at least five years experience of working under the supervision of a solicitor. The majority of trainee legal executives work in law firms whilst studying part-time for ILEX examinations. Legal executives often commence their career as legal secretaries or administrative assistants.

A legal executive's work can vary, depending on the legal executive's specialism, and can include the preparation of legal documents, communicating with clients, drawing up wills, and drafting contracts - or representing clients in magistrate and county courts. A legal executive will also be involved in explaining legal matters to clients, liaising with fellow professionals from legal practices, banks and accountancy firms and other lawyers.

Legal executives may also act as commissioners for oaths and/or as advocates. Legal executives have opportunities to run their own departments, supervising other legal executives, clerical staff and junior solicitors and, in smaller practices, legal executives can become practice managers. Qualified legal executives can also become solicitors. Legal executives are now able to manage a case from start to finish in civil and matrimonial proceedings.
