Lawyer
Being a lawyer can mean many different things. A legal career can cover many areas of work, and many disciplines of law. A solicitor may work in a commercial company, a private legal practice or for a governmental or other public sector body. A lawyer's work can vary widely. Most broadly, a lawyer works in one of two areas - commercial (working for and with companies) and personal (those involved with individuals). You could be a banking and financial services lawyer, scrutinising a major corporate loan or intellectual property rights, or you could be a personal practitioner lawyer advising on clinical negligence or personal injury cases.
Lawyers practice areas can be treated as different jobs. A lawyer practicing as a human rights solicitor has very little, professionally, to do with a corporate lawyer. For a lawyer, each discipline has its own demands relating to knowledge, working practices and remuneration packages Many lawyers work as paralegals during their studies. This will involve less direct client contact, but gives invaluable insights into the workings of the legal profession for students. During a lawyer's time at University, they can specialise in subjects such as commercial law, EU law, International law (non EU) and criminal law working with courts, tribunals and the judiciary.
Lawyers interested in business might take up positions in financial and investment services, insolvency and bankruptcy, competition lawyer, company lawyer, employment lawyer, computer and IT lawyer or intellectual property lawyer. Some lawyers will focus on practice as a civil liberties and human rights lawyer, civil litigation lawyer, immigration lawyer, discrimination lawyer, consumer rights lawyer. Lawyers working on individual cases may concentrate on becoming a charity lawyer, children's' lawyer, residential or commercial conveyance lawyer or work in Trust law, or wills and probate.
