Legal jobs account for almost two per cent (34,000) of all Scottish jobs. Most legal jobs are in the custodial sector, and 70% of these legal jobs are with Scottish Police Forces. Over 4,500 staff are employed in legal jobs in Scottish prisons. The majority of legal jobs are in the public sector, but an increasing number of private sector companies now provide work in this area.
Legal jobs in the custodial, or justice, sector can be found in Community Justice, Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, Custodial Care (Prisons), Policing or the Scottish Court Service.
Within the legal services sector, legal jobs are mainly in companies, private practice and in-house teams led by solicitors and advocates. There are just under 100,000 lawyers working in the UK today (9,100 solicitors and 460 advocates in Scotland). Dependent on the area, or areas, of practice, legal jobs within the legal services sector might involve advising or supporting lawyers to provide legal jobs services in Private Clients, Conveyancing, Criminal Law, Estate Work, Financial Services, or Wills, Executries and Trusts.
Legal jobs could also involve you in legal departments within Banking and Financial Institutions, Central Government, Construction Industry, Insurance Companies, Lecturing and Tutoring, Local Government - legal jobs can also be found in organisations such as the Church of Scotland and the Scottish Legal Aid Board, CBI, Scottish Consumer Council, Law Centres, Citizens Advice Bureaux and Legal Publishers - and many legal jobs exist in the Oil Industry, Procurator Fiscal Service, Public Utilities and The Armed Forces.
